IWD 2025 Spotlight: Rola Abu Manneh, Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered in the UAE, Middle East, and Pakistan

Women now account for 18%[1] of all C-suite positions in financial services industries globally. The study further highlights the multiplier effect impact showing that for each woman added to the C-suite, there is a positive and quantifiable[2] impact on the number of women in senior leadership positions just below the C-suite across regions. This underscores the importance of dismantling the glass ceiling and paving the way for greater gender inclusivity.

The financial services industry has made several strides to fast-track inclusion, champion women and remains committed to being a driver of change. 2025’s International Women’s Day theme #AcclerateAction is a call to emphasise the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality and address systemic barriers and biases that women face.

As part of this IWD 2025 spotlight, The Digital Banker and Global Private Banker aim to recognize senior women leaders from across the world who are accelerating action and making significant contributions toward a more gender-inclusive world.

Today we put the spotlight on Rola Abu Manneh, the Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered in the UAE, Middle East, and Pakistan. In early 2023, Rola joined as a Director on the Boards of both Standard Chartered (Pakistan) Limited and Standard Chartered Uganda. In 2021, Rola became a member of the Board of Directors of Make-A-Wish Foundation UAE and the Dubai International Chamber. Over the years, Rola has championed women empowerment and female entrepreneurship through different initiatives and is committed to supporting the wider community by providing university students with mentorship programmes, in collaboration with leading partners. Rola is a member of the Global Council for Sustainable Development Goal 5 – Gender Equality (‘SDG5’); a UAE delegate in G20Empower; and a member of the NYUAD Vice Chancellor’s Leadership Council. Rola completed her studies at the University of London – Royal Holloway and Bedford New College and holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics & Operational Research.

What are some of the milestone and highlights of your journey that have defined your career and helped you become the leader you are today?

My journey has been shaped by resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to driving meaningful impact. A defining milestone was becoming the first Emirati woman to lead an international bank in the UAE, a role made possible by the unwavering support of my family and my country.

Further, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my position is contributing to the economic and financial development of countries across the region. Through my work, I have had the privilege of supporting key national initiatives that drive progress and innovation in the banking sector.

Beyond these milestones, I am passionate about the digitisation of banking, having overseen advancements that enhance customer experience and financial inclusion.

Equally important to me is championing women empowerment and entrepreneurship. Having benefited from strong mentors early in my career, I am committed to paying it forward through supporting and advocating for the next generation of women leaders in the banking sector and beyond.

Can you share some of the biggest challenges you faced in your journey and how you overcame them?

One of the biggest challenges was navigating a traditionally male-dominated industry, where I often had to work twice as hard to be recognised for my capabilities than my gender. Overcoming this required persistence, confidence, and a relentless focus on delivering results.

Another challenge was balancing professional ambitions with personal commitments. The key was learning to set boundaries and prioritise effectively while surrounding myself with a strong support system. Over time, I have become a firm believer in the power of inclusive leadership ensuring that both men and women have the right environment to thrive.

What are some of the projects and initiatives you have championed to #AccelerateAction for your women colleagues while also driving inclusivity and innovation across the bank?

At Standard Chartered, we don’t just talk about diversity and inclusion (D&I); we take action. I have championed several initiatives aimed at increasing female representation at senior levels, including structured mentorship and sponsorship programmes that connect high-potential women with senior leaders.

We have also introduced a return-to-work programme, ensuring that women re-entering the workforce after career breaks receive the right support and training. In addition, we have embedded diversity and inclusion into our hiring strategy to ensure we are building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve.

On the innovation front, I strongly believe that diverse teams drive better decision-making. That is why we continue to create an environment where different perspectives are valued and where innovation is at the core of our business strategy.

Speaking of #AccelerateAction and innovating for the future, how do you see women playing a key role in these areas?

Women are already at the forefront of shaping the future of banking; whether through leading digital transformation, driving sustainable finance, or spearheading client-centric innovation.

The real opportunity lies in ensuring that women have the right platforms and opportunities to accelerate their impact. This means increasing female representation in leadership roles, supporting women in technology and financial services, and continuing to challenge outdated biases that limit progress.

The future of our industry depends on diverse perspectives, and I have no doubt that women will play an even greater role in shaping what comes next.

Talk to us about the transformative power of financial inclusion in driving societal and organisational shifts? What role will emerging technologies play in these shifts?

Financial inclusion is one of the most powerful drivers of economic and social progress. When individuals and businesses have access to financial services, it unlocks opportunities, fuels entrepreneurship, and fosters economic stability.

Emerging technologies, particularly blockchain and digital banking, are revolutionising financial inclusion. Digital banking solutions are reaching underserved communities, while digitally driven credit assessments are helping more people gain access to finance. The key is ensuring that we use these technologies responsibly, bridging gaps rather than creating new ones.

For organisations, financial inclusion is not just about accessibility, it’s about sustainability, growth, and long-term impact. Banks that prioritise inclusive finance will ultimately be the ones that drive real change.

What are your predictions for women in banking three years from now?

In three years, I expect to see even greater female representation in leadership roles, not just as a result of diversity initiatives but because organisations are recognising that diverse leadership leads to stronger business outcomes.

I also foresee more women leading in areas such as fintech and sustainability, sectors that are shaping the future of financial services. However, progress will require continued commitment from the industry to remove barriers and create environments where women can thrive at every stage of their careers.

Finally, what advice would you give to your colleagues – especially women – and other women who dream of reaching the pinnacle of the banking industry?

My advice to women aspiring to reach the top of the banking industry is to own their ambition, invest in continuous learning, and build a strong network of mentors and allies who can support their growth.

Confidence comes from knowledge and experience, so embrace every opportunity to develop expertise and take on new challenges, even those outside your comfort zone. Success is not just about personal achievement but also about creating opportunities for others, so championing and supporting other women is just as important as advancing your own career.

The banking industry is evolving, and there has never been a better time for women to step up, lead, and shape the future of financial services with conviction and purpose.
