[Spotlight] Expanding sustainable wealth opportunities through digital innovation and client education

As Global Head of ESG Solutions, Wealth and Premier Solutions, Peggy Smith leads HSBC’s efforts to embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into clients’ wealth management journey. Working across HSBC Private Bank and Premier Wealth, she oversees the ESG, sustainable and purpose-led investment proposition while fostering collaboration across product, investment, technology, communications, risk and governance functions.

Under Smith’s leadership, the ESG Solutions team has strengthened the bank’s ability to align sustainable investing with clients’ financial objectives. One notable milestone involved integrating sustainability preferences into the client journey through dedicated questionnaires, enabling relationship managers in key markets to better understand clients’ priorities and incorporate them into investment discussions where appropriate.

The team has also broadened the bank’s range of ESG and sustainable investment offerings, complemented by Chief Investment Office market insights and educational content that help clients navigate sustainability-related risks and opportunities.

“Clients want clear guidance on how sustainable investing fits into their portfolio, so we make the journey transparent and practical. Partnering across HSBC, we deliver ESG, sustainable and purpose-led investing solutions, alongside investment insights that help clients identify sustainability-related risks and opportunities while staying aligned to their financial goals and risk preferences,” Smith said.

Looking ahead, Smith and her team plan to further expand ESG and sustainable investment capabilities and enhance digital tools and reporting. They also remain focused on strengthening transparency, governance and regulatory alignment, helping clients invest with greater confidence as sustainability expectations and disclosure standards continue to evolve.

            COVID-19
Amid economic activity revival on the back of the Covid-19 vaccine program, organisations moving from business continuity plans to stable working environments, together with the slightest improvement in unemployment numbers, forced the world to adjust to new realities. Coming to terms with the “new normal”, global investors are now on the look-out for attractive and stable investment opportunities.

Needs of Private Wealth customers and families worldwide have drastically changed due to the pandemic and banks have had to accelerate efforts to deploy a multi-channel service strategy and safeguard clients’ businesses and wealth against negative impacts of economic uncertainly.

The Global Private Banking Innovation Awards will recognise the world’s best private banks, wealth managers and asset managers that are championing innovation across advisory, service, products, customer experience and more.
