Malaysia’s national payments network, PayNet has announced a new partnership with Alipay+ and Weixin Pay (WeChat Pay) aimed at ramping up spending by Chinese and broader Asian tourists during the summer travel period.
Through this initiative, tourists using their familiar e‑wallets can simply scan the local DuitNow QR codes to make purchases—all without downloading new apps. The system is interoperable with over 2.5 million merchants across Malaysia—from F&B stalls and hotels to souvenir vendors and tour operators.
By integrating 15 international wallets (including both Alipay and Weixin Pay), PayNet aims to make Malaysia effortlessly cashless for inbound travellers.
During the December 2024 peak travel season, transactions made via Alipay+ on DuitNow QR delivered a six-fold year‑on‑year revenue surge for local merchants. Riding this momentum, the tripartite initiative has set a goal of increasing tourist-linked DuitNow QR transactions by over 130% in 202.
To support the influx of travelers, three themed incentive programmes have been launched:
- Alipay+ “Lucky Draw” (June 26–July 14): Shoppers using AlipayCN/Alipay+ via DuitNow QR can enter for a chance to win a fully paid trip to Hong Kong to watch Arsenal vs. Tottenham on July 31, including flights and a hotel stay.
- Alipay+ “Eat, Play & Save” (June 15–September 30): Discounts abound at curated F&B venues and travel attractions throughout Malaysia.
- Weixin Pay “Badge & Rewards” (July 15–September 15): Users earn virtual cultural badges with each DuitNow QR spend, redeemable for coupons—plus enjoy preferential FX rates year‑round.
Boosting MSMEs and economic growth
Chief Marketing Officer of PayNet, Gary Yeoh, emphasised the wider business impact, describing the collaboration as “smart tourism” that is “seamless for travellers, transformative for our MSMEs,” effectively connecting millions of local small and family-run businesses to global consumer spending.
Tourism Malaysia’s Director General Datuk Manoharan Periasamy hailed the campaigns as integral to achieving the ambitious target of six million Chinese tourist arrivals this year, saying, “making travel simple, welcoming, and convenient is the key to attracting more visitors”.
