NMB Bank has officially launched the fifth edition of its Umebima insurance mass mobilization campaign, introducing a new digital insurance solution aimed at boosting uptake of the risk management service across Tanzania.
The campaign, themed “Ni Kubofya Tu”, was unveiled yesterday in Dar es Salaam and marks a significant step in the bank’s efforts to digitize insurance access. At the event, NMB also introduced ‘Jirani’, a WhatsApp-based, AI-powered chatbot in offering insurance services that allows customers to purchase motor vehicle insurance directly from their mobile phones — a first for the bank.
Announcing the digital rollout, NMB’s Head of Bancassurance, Martine Massawe, said the innovation is part of a broader strategy to accelerate insurance adoption among Tanzanians. “This strategic development reflects our commitment to making insurance more accessible and inclusive,” said he noted. “It also aligns with the national agenda to increase insurance penetration in the country to 50% by the 2029/30 financial year.”
The new service is expected to make insurance more convenient for everyday users, particularly those in underserved areas, by reducing the time and complexity traditionally associated with policy acquisition.
“Insurance penetration in Tanzania remains critically low. By introducing digital platforms like Jirani, we aim to close that gap and ensure more Tanzanians can access and benefit from insurance services,” Massawe noted.
Currently, the majority of insurance uptake is limited to compulsory motor insurance, while uptake of voluntary policies such as health, life, and property remains low. Through campaigns like Umebima and tools like Jirani, Massawe said NMB Bank is actively working to change that narrative.
During the Umebima 2025 launch, NMB Bank also announced the strengthening of its partnership with the National Insurance Corporation (NIC), a collaboration that began in 2020. The two institutions recently enhanced their alliance by integrating digital service systems to streamline customer experience.
“System integration between NMB and NIC now enables real-time issuance of control numbers and instant delivery of insurance documents,” said Karimu Meshack, NIC’s Director of Marketing and Communication.
He noted that NIC’s involvement in the Umebima campaign goes beyond product promotion. “We are partnering with NMB not only to raise awareness about the importance of insuring life and property but also to drive greater uptake of insurance services.”
As part of the collaboration, NMB and NIC will deploy joint teams for a three-month nationwide campaign, offering insurance education and selling policies across the country. The outreach aims to strengthen public understanding of insurance as a tool for protecting lives, property, and businesses.
“Insurance penetration in Tanzania remains below 5 percent. We must all work together to build a more secure, informed, and insured nation,” Meshack added.
