Neobank Jupiter enters insurance market after securing licence

Mumbai, 21 July 2025 – Indian neobank Jupiter has received a corporate agency licence from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), allowing it to distribute both life and general insurance products through its app, according to an official statement released via Press Trust of India (PTI).

The licence allows Jupiter to expand beyond banking and investment services into insurance distribution. According to the company, it will initially offer curated term-life and health policies in partnership with established insurers, although it has not yet disclosed the names of those partners.

“Insurance is a critical layer in the financial journey, and it remains underserved and underutilised in India, especially by the younger generation,” said Rohit Kumar Pandey, President at Jupiter Money.

According to the same report, Jupiter plans to broaden its offerings with embedded insurance products, including travel cover linked to credit card usage, cyber-fraud micro-policies, and device protection tied to online shopping behaviour. The company said the goal is to embed “peace of mind into how users save, spend and invest.”

The insurance licence is the latest in a series of regulatory approvals obtained by Jupiter, following a non-banking financial company (NBFC) licence in 2023 and a prepaid payment instrument (PPI) licence in 2024. According to The Economic Times, these approvals form part of Jupiter’s strategy to become a full-stack financial platform.

Founded in 2019 by Jitendra Gupta, Jupiter is backed by investors including Peak XV, Matrix Partners, QED, and Tiger Global. The company reported over three million users as of July 2025 and was last valued at approximately USD 710 million during its Series C round in late 2021.

India’s insurance penetration remains below 4% of GDP, and digital-first platforms like Jupiter are aiming to bridge this gap by offering simplified, in-app policy discovery and issuance targeted at younger users.
