Exclusive Interview with John Fahey, Member of the Investment Management Association of Singapore (IMAS)’s Digital Innovation Committee: “By leveraging Gen-AI, asset management firms can enhance their decision-making processes, improve client satisfaction, and maintain a competitive edge in an increasingly data-driven financial landscape”

TDB: How has Gen-AI transformed the wealth management landscape and what use cases do you see for asset management firms in particular?

John Fahey, Member of the Investment Management Association of Singapore (IMAS)’s Digital Innovation Committee and Programme Manager, Fidelity International: Whilst it is still at an early stage, we believe Gen-AI has and will continue to have significant impact on the wealth management landscape. Areas that are already experiencing impact are in customer engagement, operational efficiencies, and better information analysis.

With Gen-AI’s ability to process information in a different way, it is now possible to extract insights using simpler interfaces providing a means to democratize that activity. This, in turn, can help people process the outputs creatively and assist them in their work areas, even ones such as investment strategies and risk management. One sees Gen AI being used to create a new layer of personalization which can then be helpful across some of the portfolio management activities too. However, the more immediate impact would be across those areas of information processing which can now be automated and bring in the scale and efficiency needed. By doing so, it frees up resources to focus on higher value-added activities. Lastly, Gen-AI models are being used to forecast market trends, further assisting in decision-making.

By leveraging Gen-AI, asset management firms can enhance their decision-making processes, improve client satisfaction, and maintain a competitive edge in an increasingly data-driven financial landscape.

TDB: What implications does this have for the long-term job security of investment professionals and advisors employed in the industry?

John Fahey: The rise of Gen-AI in wealth and asset management has raised several questions in this area – often around automation and efficiency gains, as well as the shift in skill requirements. However, I would argue its far being all negative. There are many opportunities from people being able to partner with Gen-AI, including new opportunities in the areas of Data Science, Ethics & Compliance, and Integrating AI into our platforms and processes.

Investment professionals who continuously update their skills and knowledge to include AI and data analytics will likely not only find themselves remaining relevant, but in high demand. Also, people should keep in mind that although AI is excellent in processing data and identifying patterns, our human creativity, strategic thinking, and the ability to handle complex, ambiguous situations will continue to remain irreplaceable.

Gen-AI also presents significant opportunities for those willing to adapt. Investment professionals who embrace AI as a tool to enhance their capabilities, focus on client-centric roles, and continuously develop new skills will likely thrive in the transformed landscape.

TDB: Please share with us the rationale behind the recent launch of IMAS’s Fintech Directory?

John Fahey: In asset management, the ability to generate value through digitisation will increasingly separate leaders and followers. Recognising its impact, IMAS took the lead to encourage the industry to digitalise. IMAS is constantly on a look-out to discover new solutions, working with consultants and government agencies to connect with the best fintechs, solve industry problems and leverage economies of scale to galvanise digital transformation in our industry.

In 2019, IMAS introduced the first association-led Digital Accelerator Program in Asia for the asset management industry. Sourcing industry wide problem statements and working with both large and small asset management firms, IMAS engaged with over 300 Fintechs and incubated over 30 solutions tailored to solve the problem statements for the industry.

Building on this, IMAS launched the Fintech Directory, which is a comprehensive guide to fintech solutions curated specifically for the asset management industry.

The IMAS Fintech Directory will give industry professionals the ability to browse industry problem statements submitted by AMCs and its relevant solutions, search for curated fintech solutions with its filter functions tailored for AMCs, access comprehensive fintech profile and information, as well as submit new problem statements and identify potential solutions through the directory.

TDB: How will this initiative unlock further value for industry stakeholders and how does this align with the broader goals of IMAS’ Digital Innovation Committee?

John Fahey: The Digital Innovation Committee (DIC) advocates and promotes the adoption of digital technology and innovation within the asset management industry. To pave the way forward for industry-wide digitalisation, the Committee seeks to forge partnerships with global key fintech centres to foster cross border collaborations; create a one-stop platform and digital ecosystem for fintechs and corporates to interact; showcase and identify technology solutions; and introduce curated digital skills training programmes to upskill the workforce.

We believe that the launch of the Fintech Directory will enhance greater connectivity between asset managers and fintech companies. By creating a centralised platform, the directory simplifies the search and discovery process, making it easier for asset managers to find fintech solutions that meet their specific needs.

It will also help to streamline problem solving. The Fintech Directory can help asset managers tackle immediate pain points but also fosters a collaborative environment where fintech companies can innovate and develop customised solutions that cater directly to industry demands.

Last but not least, we believe that by providing a robust platform that encourages the integration of advanced technologies, the Fintech Directory supports the DIC’s mission to drive digital transformation. This not only helps asset managers achieve greater operational efficiency and competitiveness but also contributes to the overall modernisation of the industry.
