As cyber threats become faster, more sophisticated, and increasingly AI-driven, Absa’s Chief Security Office (CSO) is rethinking how cybersecurity operates across one of Africa’s largest banking groups. At the heart of this transformation is the Detect function, the team responsible for designing and continuously enhancing the bank’s enterprise-wide threat detection capabilities.
The team developed Nia, an AI-powered phishing assistant that strengthens cyber defence while improving the colleague experience. Nia helps employees identify and respond to phishing threats in real time, combining intelligent automation with human decision-making.
Rather than relying solely on reactive security processes, the CSO Detect team has built capabilities that use advanced monitoring, analytics and machine learning to identify suspicious activity, policy violations and emerging risks across the bank’s technology environment. This enables faster investigations, quicker response times and a more proactive approach to managing cyber risk.
For Absa, the initiative reflects a broader digital banking strategy centred on trust. By embedding AI into security operations, the CSO is strengthening resilience while giving analysts the tools to focus on higher-value security decisions instead of repetitive manual tasks. The result is a more scalable and effective security operations centre that blends AI’s speed with human expertise.
The team sees AI playing an even greater role in cybersecurity. From enhancing detection accuracy to reducing operational complexity, Absa’s CSO is focused on building intelligent, purpose-driven security solutions that help the bank stay ahead of evolving threats while protecting colleagues, customers and the wider business across its pan-African operations.
