Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent the backbone for most global economies. Recognising their paramount importance towards employment creation, alleviation of poverty and significant contributions to the GDP, Pakistan’s Bank of Punjab has placed them as a priority within their strategic plans.
With an emphasis on digital transformation and financial inclusivity, the bank has played a pivotal role in nurturing the growth and development of such businesses nationwide. For this reason, it has been recognised as the Best SME Bank in Pakistan, a prestigious award presented by The Digital Banker at the Global SME Banking Innovation Awards 2024.
Focus Areas
This recognition underscores the bank’s firm commitment to fostering the growth and prosperity of SMEs, showcasing outstanding efforts in digital innovation, promoting financial inclusivity and providing dedicated support to SMEs. The bank’s leadership and strategies have set new benchmarks in the financial industry, significantly contributing to the development of SMEs in Pakistan.
A key driver of BOP’s success lies in its unwavering focus on financial inclusivity. The bank actively provides accessible banking services, conducts financial literacy programs, and offers tailored financing solutions to empower SMEs.
BOP is also the largest commercial bank in the country in terms of providing collateral-free loans to SMEs and acknowledges that the real success lies at the grassroots level and across amelioration of marginalised segments. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) form the core of BOP’s strategy across all sectors.
Key Initiatives
In its efforts to address disparities and empower women in Pakistan, BOP is actively engaged through its BOP Naz Proposition initiative, which seeks to acknowledge this vast talent pool awaiting empowerment and utilisation. Despite challenges, BOP has successfully provided a significant number of loans to this segment, addressing issues related to access to finance, lack of collateral, and high interest rates.
Digital banking solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of SMEs mark another significant pillar of BOP’s success. It introduced the first end-to-end digital lending product, empowering small entrepreneurs with seamless and efficient financial services with a view to navigate between the complexities of the modern-day business landscape.

The distinctive SME Digital Portal, exclusively designed for BOP customers, streamlines the lending process via receipt of credit applications through digital channels.
The bank also introduced the country’s first regression-based statistical scorecard model for credit evaluation. This method is specifically tailored for small enterprise loans. Applicants are engaged through recorded communication, and loans are granted utilising a Q&A-based cashflow-centric lending framework, assessed via digital scorecards.
BOP has also ventured into a revolutionary area by partnering with a technology company as a trial participant for an advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-powered digital infrastructure project aimed at evaluating scope 3 or financed emissions. Targeting the SME sector, this endeavour in the ESG space seeks to encourage SME funding and advocate for sustainable methodologies.
It has collaborated with an international organisation to establish the ‘Pakistan SME Environment and Performance Index (BOPPAK-SEPI)’. This index aims to provide periodic insights into the environmental and performance dimensions of the SME sector in Pakistan, with detailed information on sub-segments and clusters.
This data will enable more informed policymaking, regulation, and targeted financial interventions by encompassing demographic details, such as women-led and export-oriented SMEs.
“We are honoured to be acknowledged as the Best SME Bank by The Digital Banker,” said Zafar Masud, CEO of Bank of Punjab. “This award is a testament to our commitment to the success of SMEs in Pakistan.
